The Inuit, one of the oldest and most peaceful peoples on earth, now find themselves at a crucial crossroads. The population in Greenland has not grown in thirty years, and the number of indigenous peoples stands at just fifty thousand. Threatened by the relentless melting of the ice, the extractive exploitation policies of Canada and the United States, forced to restrict the traditional practice of hunting, with rampant alcoholism and a high suicide rate among the young, the Inuit are traumatically experiencing the intrusion of modernity into their lifestyles.
The Ice Shaman is the new project by Barbieri, Cherstich, Pizzo and Casotti that narrates this difficult transition through film and music: the images, shot for the occasion in Greenland, dialogue with original music by Massimo Pupillo and traditional songs by Karina Moeller, an Inuit singer living in Denmark . The Ice Shaman takes the audience to the small village of Kulusuk, on the southeastern coast of the island, and to the small town of Tasillaq, where Robert Peroni from Alto Adige, who has been involved in the defense and protection of Inuit culture for 40 years, lives .
